Founded in the Calais "Jungle" Camp in 2016

Refugee Info Bus was founded in the Calais ''Jungle'' Camp in 2016. It began as a WIFI hotspot and mobile office for refugees and asylum seekers living in Northern France

Within a year, we delivered more than 1,000 workshops run  run by Dari, Arabic, Amharic and Tigrenya speaking volunteer workshop facilitators.

During the evictions of the Calais "Jungle" Refugee Camp, we provided over 4,000 multi-lingual info-packs in Arabic, Farsi, Kurmanji, Pashto, Amharic, Tigrenya and Oromo.  The packs included legal information, useful contacts and what to expect in the accomodation centres in France. They also included emergency tips to be used in the event of detention or deportation.

Though it is now more than a year since the “Jungle” was destroyed, refugees continue to arrive in Calais. With no centralised camp individuals are scattered across the town, finding temporary shelter wherever they can: forests, industrial parks, beneath hedges.

We continue to provide WIFI and phone charging facilities to homeless refugees, as well as information about claiming asylum in France. In July 2018, we expanded our operations in Northern France to deliver our services to refugees living in Dunkirk. 

These individuals arriving to Greece are increasingly among the most vulnerable, including those who have suffered violence, who are victims of rape and/or who have been tortured. More than 60,000 are stranded in Greece, many living in camps that are at twice or three times their holding capacity.

Operating in camps across the mainland and islands, including the Lavrio, Ritsona, Elefsina, Scaramanga, Souda and Vial camps, we do this work using both handouts, and audio and video materials. Refugees are also able to meet daily with our team of legal caseworkers, who speak Farsi, Dari, Urdu, Arabic, Kurmanji and Sorani and have personal experience of the asylum process in Greece.

By providing legal information and advice, we help refugees navigate the complex and ever changing asylum process in what is one of Europe’s major points of entry.

Launched in October 2017, Refugee Info Bus’s Yalla Nahki multilingual videos provide clear and accessible explanations of the complex asylum system in Greece Uploaded to our Facebook and YouTube accounts.

They are devised and produced by our video team based in Athens, with refugee team members taking on research, production, and presenting roles. Speaking to an audience of whom they have been part, Refugee Info Bus team members are able to effectively reach their peers, dispelling some of the complexities and frustrations that characterise the ever-changing goal posts of the Greek and European asylum system.

These videos are able to reach audiences far greater than those encountered via our mobile van. 

The series, which since 2017, includes 15 videos has reached over 300K people online.
